Tomi
URO1 PR'Rockies Hound of Hades NTD TKN RN
Tomi came to me as a foster dog for Alaskan Klee Kai National Rescue. She is an oversized Klee Kai measuring around 19 inches at the shoulder. She was relinquished to the rescue by her breeder/owner stating that she couldn't breed her due to a genetic hip disorder at the age of 1.5 years which ended up being false information. Tomi was extremely reactive and fear aggressive, massively underweight and could barely walk when we first got her. She started out being fostered elsewhere but it wasn't a good fit and the regional rescue coordinator thought I would be a good fit to foster due to my background in training. She decided almost immediately that I was her person and just hopped right in my lap the first time she stepped into my house and has always showed me nothing but unconditional love and trust while still being fearful of all other humans. We did some digging into her background and found out she did not have a good start in life and her hip had been shattered at 6 months old and she never got any medical treatment other than the initial diagnoses. I believe living in such intense pain for a year really added to her grumpy personality. She was able to get surgery through the rescue which included an FHO, Having some extra bits of useless bone removed and knitting together muscle to create a false joint. After this she has less than half her hip left. She spent the next 6 months doing strict PT and had almost weekly vet checkups for awhile. After surgery she seemed so much less angry and reactive towards human and the world in general and got to relearn how to walk. We are thankful that the breeders who bred her parents were able to step and take responsibility for the dogs they bred and still co-owned and did end up sending us her ukc paperwork.
We have consistently worked on her behavioral issues which is what led me to joining our current training club as I wanted to work with her in a controlled environment with other people and dogs around. She has come so far since we first brought her home and I can thank her for getting me involved in our training club and doing dog sports. Tomi absolutely loves Rally but isnt a big fan of trial environments as it puts her in close quarters with strangers while being leashed so she feels like she cant escape so we mostly just train for fun. Her absolute best friend is Bindi and they are often found playing and wrestling together at home.
Tomi was diagnosed with cardiac issues this summer at the age of 5 and sadly has been declining in health. I don't know how much longer I will have my little hell hound in my life but plan on making the best of what we got!
